There's nothing better than bringing home a fresh bouquet. Whether you've picked up flowers from our West End studio or had them delivered across Atlanta, you probably want them looking beautiful for as long as possible.
The good news? With just a few simple habits, most fresh-cut flowers can last anywhere from 7–14 days—and some varieties even longer.
Here are our favorite florist-approved tips for extending the life of your bouquet.
1. Start with a Clean Vase
Before arranging your flowers, wash your vase thoroughly with warm, soapy water. Even if it looks clean, bacteria from previous arrangements can dramatically shorten the life of fresh flowers.
A clean vase is one of the easiest ways to help your blooms thrive.
2. Trim the Stems
Before placing your flowers in water, trim about ½–1 inch from the bottom of each stem using sharp floral shears or a clean knife.
Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle. This creates more surface area for water absorption and prevents the stems from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase.
For best results, trim the stems every two to three days.
3. Change the Water Often
Fresh, clean water makes all the difference.
Replace the water every two to three days, rinse the vase if needed, and refill it with fresh room-temperature water. While you're at it, remove any leaves or petals that have fallen into the water.
Clean water equals happier flowers.
4. Use Flower Food
If your bouquet came with a packet of flower food, use it!
Flower food provides nutrients, helps maintain the proper pH, and slows bacterial growth—all of which help your flowers stay fresh longer.
If you don't have flower food, changing the water frequently is the next best thing.
5. Remove Leaves Below the Water Line
Leaves submerged in water quickly begin to decompose, creating bacteria that can shorten the life of your bouquet.
Before placing flowers in the vase, remove any foliage that will sit below the waterline.
6. Keep Flowers Cool
Fresh flowers love cool temperatures.
Avoid placing your arrangement in:
-
Direct sunlight
-
Near heating vents
-
Beside radiators
-
On top of electronics
-
In hot windows
-
Next to fireplaces
The cooler your flowers stay, the longer they'll last.
7. Keep Flowers Away from Fruit
This one surprises a lot of people.
Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which speeds up the aging process of many flowers.
If possible, keep bouquets away from fruit bowls, especially bananas, apples, pears, and avocados.
8. Remove Wilting Blooms
As individual flowers begin to fade, remove them from the arrangement.
This keeps the bouquet looking fresh and prevents decaying blooms from affecting healthier stems.
9. Know That Every Flower Ages Differently
Every flower has its own natural lifespan.
Some flowers—like carnations, chrysanthemums, alstroemeria, and orchids—can last two weeks or more.
Others, including tulips, ranunculus, poppies, and anemones, are naturally more delicate and may only last several days.
That doesn't mean they're poor quality—it simply reflects how those flowers grow in nature.
10. Buy Fresh, Seasonal Flowers
The freshest flowers always last the longest.
At Bloom Box Collective, we source fresh blooms multiple times each week and design our Freestyle Designer's Choice bouquets using what's looking best that day.
Choosing seasonal flowers often means you'll enjoy longer vase life and a bouquet that's full of movement, texture, and color.
Bonus Tip: Don't Stress Over Every Petal
Flowers are living things.
They open, change shape, and evolve throughout their time in the vase. Some blooms become even more beautiful as they mature.
Instead of expecting your bouquet to look exactly the same every day, enjoy watching it unfold.
That's part of the magic.
